Celebrities who wore the 154-year-old label to watch its show included Uma Thurman, Kate Hudson, Claire Danes, Mary-Kate Olsen, and Mia Wasikowska, star of the new Alice in Wonderland film.

Anna Wintour, in a red, twinkly tweed Chanel dress and fox-trimmed, Burberry “mac”, headed a troop of five international Vogue editors-in-chief.

The Tory leader David Cameron’s wife, Samantha, sat in the front row, flying the flag in a Stella McCartney jacket, Jigsaw trousers and Erdem blouse.

They saw Burberry launch a global style offensive in 2D and 3D. At 4.25pm, a few minutes behind schedule, Burberry Prorsum’s autumn/winter 2010-11 collection hit the catwalk in a 1,000-seat tent in the grounds of the Chelsea College of Art – simultaneously being streamed around the world, and also in 3D to audiences in New York, Paris, Los Angeles, Tokyo and Dubai.

The 53-piece collection, designed by the Yorkshireman Christopher Bailey was a “salute to the services”, referencing Burberry’s long involvement with the military.

The “Burberry Cadet Girls” formed a military parade, in updated sheepskin flying jackets, bristling with buckles and zips, officer’s mess jackets, khaki trouser suits, trench-coats, and naval reefer jackets.

The collection was sexed-up with skin-tight lace and satin body-conscious dresses, worn over thigh-high leather and snakeskin boots.

In a fashion first, most of the collection was available to buy online after the show, until 4pm on Friday. London Fashion Week finishes today with Men’s Day.
