Yahoo, signs real-time search and integration deal with Twitter

Yahoo! has partnered with Twitter to make its search engine results more ‘real-time’ in a deal which sees the microblogging service become integrated across its entire product suite.

Yahoo!'s deal with Twitter goes further than the microblogging service's partnerships with the likes of Google and Bing.

The search side of the partnership is very similar to previous deals Twitter has signed with Google and Microsoft’s Bing. Yahoo!'s search engine has already started indexing tweets in a bid to make its service serve faster and more timely results – a move made by Google at the end of last year.

However, what is different to the Google and Microsoft deals with the microblogging service, is that Yahoo! has effectively made itself a Twitter client, as Yahoo! users will be able to tweet from multiple locations across Yahoo!’s products. It is unknown how this will be carried out at this stage. There is a possibility it could happen via widgets.

The partnership also allow Yahoo! users to access their Twitter feed via the company’s email service, its homepage and via its content verticals – such as Yahoo! Finance.

“We’re turning the key to the online social universe — you will find the most personally relevant experiences through Yahoo!,” said Bryan Lamkin, senior vice president, consumer products group, Yahoo! “We’re also simplifying people’s lives by bringing their social worlds — and the world —- together for easy access.”

Twitter's co-founder, Biz Stone added: "The information in one single tweet can travel light-years farther with this Yahoo! integration. Tweets in more places brings relevance where and when you need it most."

The search integration has already gone live – with the other integrations expected to launch later this year.

It is not known whether money exchanged hands between the two parties, but Google is believed to have paid double digit millions when it signed its real-time search deal with Twitter.

The news follows closely behind the announcement that Microsoft and Yahoo!'s search deal was granted the green light by the US and European regulators, as it was not deemed anti-competitive.

Last year, Yahoo! made its first steps toward including real-time search results when it signed a deal with OneRiot. It is not yet known what how this deal affects that arrangement. OneRiot was unavailable to comment.
