These Dolce & Gabbana models look as if they're marching out of a concentration camp

The Italian fashion designers Dolce & Gabbana have been inspired by classic Italian tailoring for their latest collection, shown in Milan yesterday. But looking at the photographs in today’s newspapers, what strikes me is how emaciated the women wearing the clothes look.

Seventy-five models stride across the catwalk dressed in tailored black jackets and black knickers. They’re very smart, I suppose, and their expressions are purposeful.

But, honestly, my first thought as I took in their sunken cheekbones, scrawny legs and apparently wasted thighs, was that they look as if they’re marching out of a concentration camp. They must have been hand-picked for their lean and hungry appearance. Actually, it is such an extreme look it amounts to a kind of fetishisation of starvation. But why? What is the point of it? Certainly, it’s not something you’d want your daughter to emulate.
