The product range includes a smartphone capable of downloading and playing video games, according to the Wall Street Journal.

Sony is said to be growing increasingly wary of Apple's attempts to dominate the mobile devices market. The forthcoming release of the iPad is a particular concern, as there are fears it may tempt consumers away from netbooks and laptop computers.

The Japanese electronics giant is developing a prototype, portable device that combines the best elements of netbooks, e-book readers and portable games consoles, sources close to the company told the WSJ.

Rumours of a so-called "PlayStation Portable" phone have swirled for years, with Sony widely expected to make use of its Sony Ericsson handset division to develop a mobile phone capable of downloading and playing PlayStation games.

It is believed the devices might go on sale this year, although precise specifications and pricing details are yet to be finalised, say sources. Sony is also readying its own version of Apple's iTunes store. The platform, tentatively named Sony Online Service, will enable users to download music, movies and television programmes, as well as older games released for the original PlayStation console.

"That's the vision, but it's still not quite clear what specific steps Sony will take to achieve that, especially when iPad and other highly capable mobile devices are crowding the market," Nobuo Kurahashi, an analyst at Mizuho Investors Securities, told the Journal.
